A different kind of listing

On a conventional booking platform you buy a product and are assigned whichever guide is working. On ToursByLocals you buy a person. Each guide has a profile, a photograph, a stated background and their own accumulated reviews, and you can message them before committing.

At the Louvre the listings reflect that. Several are explicitly built around the guide’s credentials — tours advertised as being led by an art historian or by someone holding a doctorate in art history — alongside more conventional skip-the-line and best-of routes.

Using it well

The platform rewards effort and punishes skimming. Three habits separate a good booking here from a disappointing one.

• Read the individual, never the platform. A marketplace average tells you nothing about the person who will meet you at the Carrousel. Their own review count and recent reviews are the only data that matter.
• Message before booking. Say what interests you and ask what they would leave out in two hours. A specialist answers with an opinion; a generalist answers with a list.
• Check the licence. Guiding inside French national museums is a regulated profession. Ask whether they hold the guide-conférencier card — a licensed guide will answer immediately.

Pricing, and the usual omission

Guides here price per group, which makes the platform disproportionately good value for parties of three or more and relatively expensive for solo travellers. A rate that looks steep for one person is often the best deal on this site for a family of five.

Museum admission is commonly excluded. Confirm it explicitly, and confirm who books the timed entry slot — that detail causes more day-of confusion on marketplace guide bookings than any other.

What you give up

Control comes at the cost of a safety net. Book an agency and if your guide falls ill, someone else appears. Book an individual and you are dependent on one person’s calendar and health. Cancellation and rebooking terms are set per guide rather than by a single platform-wide policy, so read them for the specific listing.

There is also a research cost. Choosing well here takes half an hour of reading profiles. Visitors who will not do that reliably get a worse outcome than they would from simply booking a well-reviewed semi-private tour on a mainstream marketplace.
