How to read this list

Operators are sorted into three tiers by how much evidence sits behind them — published itineraries, guide credentials, independent discussion, and a track record we could actually check. Tier is not a quality score for your particular trip: a tier-C independent guide may be the best two hours of your week, and a tier-A brand may be wrong for you.

Each profile answers the same questions: what they are known for, how they price, what group size you will really be in, who they suit, and what to watch for.

The two business models

Almost every decision here reduces to one thing — whether you are buying a seat or buying a guide.

Tier A — the established names

Published itineraries, verifiable guide credentials and a real track record. If you want to book with confidence and do minimal research, start here.

Tier B — solid, with caveats

Real operators with genuine local presence, but thinner public information or a broader focus than the Louvre alone. Worth an enquiry, worth asking more questions.

Tier C — niche, independent or peripheral

Individual guides, specialists in something adjacent, and one membership society that is not a tour company at all. Several are excellent; all need direct contact rather than a click.

Choosing by what you actually want

• Depth and credentials: Context Travel, or an independent art historian such as Sandrine Voillet.
• Children: Paris Muse or THATLou, both of which run hunts rather than lectures. More on the family tours page.
• Choosing the person yourself: ToursByLocals.
• Structure and a longer route: Take Walks.
• Lowest price with a guide: Discover Walks or Paris City Vision — accept the group size.
• The museum’s own version: official Louvre guided tours, often the cheapest guided option and the hardest to schedule.
• Visiting repeatedly: Société des Amis du Louvre membership, which buys unlimited priority entry and no guide at all.

Questions worth asking any operator

1. What is the maximum group size? A number, not the phrase “small group”.
2. Is museum admission included? And who books the entry slot?
3. Is the guide a licensed guide-conférencier?
4. Which entrance do you use? Passage Richelieu is the group door; the pyramid is the slow one.
5. What is the cancellation policy? Marketplaces give 24 hours; agencies often do not.
6. Which rooms would you skip? The answer tells you whether you are buying expertise or a script.

Questions people actually ask

Which Louvre tour company is best?

It depends on party size and what you want from the guide. Context Travel for art-historical depth, Paris Muse for families and conversation, Take Walks for structured longer itineraries, ToursByLocals if you want to choose the individual guide yourself. For two people on a first visit, a marketplace semi-private tour usually beats all of them on value.

Is it cheaper to book direct or through a platform?

For two people, a platform. For four or more, direct — agencies price per group, so the per-head cost falls with every person you add, while platforms price per seat. The crossover sits at about three to four people.

Are Louvre tour operators licensed?

The good ones are. Guiding inside French national museums is a regulated profession, and licensed guides-conférenciers hold a professional card that permits them to lead groups in the galleries. Ask directly — it is a normal question and a licensed guide will answer without hesitation.

Do tour operators include museum admission?

Marketplace tours usually do. Agency bookings frequently do not, because they price the guide separately. At €22 for EEA residents and €32 for everyone else, that line changes the comparison materially for a family.

How do you rank these operators?

On four things: real group size, guide credentials, what is included, and how much evidence sits behind the reputation. We take affiliate commission on some booking links but not on agency bookings, so the ranking cannot follow the money — several operators we cannot earn a penny from are in our top tier.
